In the development process that this project has involved the search has been for ideas that are supported by evidence and systems that can support families, schools and communities in putting this evidence into practice.

So what is a hub?  It is an idea that has been strongly influenced by the positive experiences we have had in Kendal as part of the Integrated Care Community in which professionals from different agencies and parts of the system have been working together across traditional boundaries.

This hub has created opportunities for shared planning and across the ages thinking.

These discussions are important because the evidence is that health and healthy relationships emerge when individuals and groups are willing to figure out what they need to learn to do to look after their own health and are motivated to take the key steps involved.

In truth therefore health promotion is a more complicated process than telling people that they should eat healthily and not smoke.

Instead a key element of health and wellbeing is the individuals sense of themself and of their own value.

Generally the experience of feeling valued and important and capable in turn leads to the behaviours that we associate with health.

Feeling valued is something that first happens in our relationships

Therefore our view is that one key element that is missing from a lot of health promotion is this detail:

Healthy adult-child relationships and healthy adult-adult relationships matter

Furthermore healthy relationships depend on a process of becoming conscious of self and other as dstinct and separate - and sometimes very frustrating to one another!.

There is an important developmental process involved in healthy relationships which cannot be rushed but can be supported.

For example, becoming conscious depends on starting to think about complex explanations of reality rather than looking for simple answers.

In the I Matter Project we support this process of becoming more conscious through our training courses and resources - one of which is called the Commuity Wheel

However skills in relationships are based on complex brain functions that emerge in early development when a child is well supported.  So we think that the evidence is really clear that a curriculum that supports these skills is an essential and overlooked element of our educational provision.   So this is why we actively seek to support collaboration between primary care and education

When a community reaches a threshold of trained professionals from a range of disciplines we are able to award the status of I Matter Licenced Community Hub Wheel

We can award a community hub license to use an I Matter Community Wheel in the following situation

1.  There is a locality based cohort of professionals such as an Integrated Care Community representing different agencies who are meeting and working together regualarly to think about child and adult health and wellbeing

2.  There is a cohort of GP's Teachers, Psychologists, Social Workers fom varied agencies within this community who are working togetheretc who have completed I Matter Foundation A and B training

2.   There is at least one Lead Practitioner licensed to run a central rolling program of Getting Started Workshops and community events and provide oversight of our tools

4.   The  Community Hub has one or more schools running a rolling program of I Matter training for other professionals and parents show casing the work and conributions of local organisations to elements of the Community Wheel.

It's quite simple really - we offer resources and encourage people to take time to think and learn about what is happening around them..

We carefully gather evidence of the impact of I Matter Training using a variety of formats and will be presenting more here very shortly.

Get Started: Learn why healthy adult-child relationships and healthy communities matter for mental health, positive behaviour and healthy child development at home and in school. Then.. Take Stock and Go for Results.

If I had understood these ideas earlier

I could have been a lot more effective
